(One of the more pressing problems that your paper identifies is that of space -- that there is only so much real estate afforded by the size and layout of the printed page. Given that space is an issue, I'm curious to know whether you have considered shifting the medium from print to digital. Both the Internet Shakespeare Editions and the Electronic New Variorum Shakespeare have the ability to display multiple layers of textual variation, or only to display a selection (or, indeed, none at all). Are there any advantages in publishing such an edition in print rather than electronically?
Would there be any utility in extending the range of textual variations to include those of modern (and historical) edited texts? In other words, are the practices you describe potentially a better way to prepare a variorum edition?
