East Midlands Early Modern Colloquium

In May 2007 Dave Postles of the Department of English at Leicester University proposed that early modernists at the universities of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent, Leicester, De Montfort, and Loughborough might want to form an interdisciplinary colloquium.

In reponse to this, a preliminary meeting was held at Loughborough University on 23 June 2007. Present were:

Takako Kata (De Montfort, English)

Andy Mousley (De Montfor, English)

Sarah Knight (Leicester, English)

Catie Gill (Loughborough, English and Drama)

David J Appleby (Nottingham, History)

Kate Loveman (Leicester, English)

Nicola Royan (Nottingham, English)

Gabriel Egan (Loughborough, English and Drama)

The meeting agreed the following actions:

We will look into applying to the Society for Renaissance Studies (mentioned by Claire Jowitt) for a bit of money to support this activity; Sarah offered to explore this

We will form a central directory of research activities, research students, and contact info on a website

The colloquium will meet for a one-day event once a year as a closed group (membership by invitation), not an open-CFP conference

Postgraduate students are eligible to be members with full status: the group and its meeting won't form a special subset for them

The colloquium will be steered by a 10-person group comprised of two people from each of the 5 institutions, to be chosen by each institution by 1 Oct 2007

There are four possible ways to run the one-day event:

Format A four standard 50mins papers spoken as plenaries

Format B four standard 50mins papers spoken as plenaries but circulated in advance via the website (or perhaps only abstracts)

Format C two standard papers in the morning, and a Masterclass in the afternoon focussed on an artefact (primary text, secondary text, object)

Format D seminars, perhaps with parallel sessions, for which papers are circulated in advance and discussed (not spoken) at the meeting

An other thing that might be included is an online poster session 6 months prior to the meeting, on which members vote and the winner gets to expand upon that work in progress at the next colloquium

The steering group is to meet at the annual meeting (perhaps straight after the colloquium)

ACTION NEEDED NOW Would all the people at the 5 institutions involved please take this project forward by doing this one thing: send me, Gabriel Egan (mail@GabrielEgan.com) your name, university and department, a few keywords outlining your research field (these I'll use to build a contacts database for the group) AND your vote for FORMAT A, B, C, or D from the above list. I propose to close voting in, say, a month and report back to the group then
